Awards To Be Given For Ossining Front Yard Gardens

Do you or your neighbors in Ossining have a beautiful front yard? Nominations are being accepted for the Mary Sawyer blue ribbon front yard flower garden awards.

The awards are in honor of Mary Sawyer, a past head of the Ossining Beautification Committee who died a few years ago, said Henry Atterbury, superintendent of Ossining Parks and Recreation.

“One of Mary’s passions was front yard flower gardens so members of the Beautification Committee decided that it would be a good idea to call attention to beautiful front yard gardens in order to do something in her honor,” Atterbury said.

About 15 yards are typically nominated, and the top three gardens are announced during Ossining’s Independence Day celebration, this year being held July 1 at Louis Engel Waterfront Park. Garden owners are presented with trophies.

“It’s just a fun thing. It’s not meant to be competitive,” Atterbury said. “We just want to pick out a few people who might not get recognized otherwise and encourage other people to beautify their yards as well.”

Nominations for beautiful front gardens in Ossining will be accepted this year until June 30. To nominate a garden call (914) 941-3189 with the garden owner’s name, address and phone number.
