Ossining Students Serve Community This Summer In Life Skills Program

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Ossining High School Life Skills students continued to sharpen their skill this summer thanks to an extended program that allowed them to work in three locations in Westchester.

Seven students took part in the July initiative where they either stocked merchandise at T.J. Maxx in Hartsdale, put together food bags for a "BackPack" program at Food Bank of Westchester in Elmsford, or helped out out at Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Council in Pleasantville.

Ossining teacher Susan Cable and three teaching assistants oversaw the students' work.

At T.J.Maxx, the students got a thrill out of seeing clothing on the display racks that they unpacked and unfolded, said Cable. She retired this month after 28 years in the school district.

The Life Skills Program is focused on vocational training, boosting independence, and developing job, work and social skills, she explained.

The students work with staff at the sites and have “developed really beautiful relationships” with employees over the years, said Cable.
