Letter: Schools Are the Bedrock of Ossining

Public schools are an essential part of a community, and that is without a doubt true in Ossining.

I am from Ossining and I graduated from OHS in the 1950s.  My family came generations before me and we stayed.  I raised children here and joined community efforts years ago to keep our public schools strong and provide educational opportunities for all.

Over the years, the community has invested in our school buildings to ensure its children and neighbor's children would have sufficient places to grow and learn.  There is a legacy of doing this during tough times:  Ossining High School was built during the Great Depression while the AMD bond was approved during financial uncertainty in the early 1960s.

The proposed work for our schools now addresses buildings that have served this community well and with additional investment, will continue to do so for a long time.  It is important work that needs to be done.  Not addressing aging roofs, masonry, boilers and ensuring adequate classroom space will cost much more in the long run.

I worked for many years in the Ossining library and came to know many that live in our town.  Some were lifelong residents like me, others 'newcomers' who brought new vibrancy and built lives here.  One of the bedrocks attracting new people and keeping families here has been, and will be, our strong schools.  We should continue to support this legacy.  I hope you will join me in voting 'Yes' on March 6th.
