OSSINING, N.Y. -Ossining's Teatown Lake Reservation was awarded with Sharpe Reservation's annual Best in the Hudson Valley syrup contest for the third time since 2003.

Teatown is the only three-time award winner for best syrup at the Best in Hudson Valley contest. Phyllis Bock, the director of education and head of syrup production at Teatown, said this year's award is particularly special due to the circumstances faced.

"We look for trees that have a healthy crown, are at least 10 inches in diameter and have no broken limbs," Bock said. "It's definitely been getting harder after all of the recent storms."

Bock and the staff at Teatown, along with the help of many residents who participate in the reservation's sugaring events, have tapped around 65 trees on the reservation and have collected sap since mid-February. Despite the many broken and fallen trees, Teatown has collected and bottled 10 gallons of syrup, a new seasonal record. Bock said the staff at Teatown has been hard at work this season to make the syrup as it takes a collection of 60 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup and eight hours straight of boiling to make a batch.

Teatown's award winning syrup is still available for purchase at Teatown's Nature Center on Spring Valley Road in Ossining.
