OSSINING, N.Y. -- September is National Yoga Month, a national observance and awareness campaign organized by the Yoga Health Foundation, and so we went to Ossining Yoga Instructor Laurice D. Nemetz, the former president of the Yoga Teachers’ Association, for some fall yoga tips.
Look for inspiration, as well as a schedule that works for you. As schools are back in session and schedules become more regular, check out a yoga class or workshop. Nemetz said she often recommends clients write their practice in a calendar and make sure they find a workshop that will inspire them.
Spend some of you day in the sunshine, whether with a brisk walk at lunchtime or by using the morning for yoga outdoors.
Practice more pranayama (breathing) techniques. As Nemetz's friend and colleague Leslie Kaminoff (the Breathing Project) notes, “Breathing has the dual nature of being both voluntary and autonomic, which is why the breath illuminates the eternal inquiry about what we can control or change and what we cannot.”

- The Ossining Public Library offers free beginner classes on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings.
- Dragonfly Yoga in Ossining offers regular beginning yoga classes on Thursday evening and Saturday mornings.
- Encourage Yoga in Croton-on-Hudson offers a “Change Your Life” special of 30 days of yoga for $40.
- Mount Kisco’s Quest Yoga Arts offers a beginner's workshop on Thursday evenings and a Yoga Basics workshop on Monday mornings.
