Movoto compiled a list of municipalities within the state with 10,000 people or more from the 2010 U.S. Census. The site then ranked the 87 qualifying areas on the following criteria:
- Total amenities
- Quality of life (cost of living, median home price, median rent, median household income, and student to teacher ratio)
- Total crimes
- Tax rates (sales tax and income tax)
- Unemployment
- Commute time
- Weather (temperature and air quality)
Ossining placed in the top 10 in two categories: unemployment (fourth) and tax rate (seventh). The village of more than 25,000 also placed 14th in weather quality.
Ossining struggled in commute times and amenities, ranking 71st and 57th out of 87 communities, respectively.
The overall score of 27.43 for Ossining placed it outside of the top seven spots which were held by Mamaroneck, Tarrytown, White Plains, Mount Kisco, Scarsdale, Harrison and Dobbs Ferry.
Westchester Communities dominated the top of the list with Rye tying Ossining for eighth and New Rochelle tying Saratoga Springs for 10th.
