OSSINING, N.Y. -- A Westchester couple was determined to provide their wedding guests memorable wedding favors -- and that determination has translated into a small business.
Warren and Brandalyn Williams finally decided on hand-blended spices they tested in their own kitchen, and that decision has paid off. In the months following, the recipients demanded more.
Not long after their wedding, the couple began WillYUM Spice, which now has a line of spices including McKay's Curry, Turmeric, Smoked Mesquite Salt, Red Pepper Flakes, Pepper's Essence and Jalapeno Seasoning Salt. The couple says the spice choices were inspired by recipes from the grooms' mother and the family's native West Indian roots.
They can all be ordered here. Folks can also sample the products at the Tarrytown and Peekskill farmers markets.
"We got bit by the do-it-yourself bug for our wedding favors and sought out fresh and unique spices to package for our guests," said Brandalyn, who is a professional makeup artist and an adjunct professor at SUNY Purchase, teaching stage makeup.
Warren is a certified surgical technologist at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow -- but he's always wanted to be a business owner.
"We love hearty, healthy home-cooked meals and love to experiment and build excitement in the kitchen," said Brandalyn. "All spices are not created equal."
The couple works with several small spice distributors, and all WillYUM Spice products are gluten-free, all natural with no preservatives or additional flavorings, and packaged weekly to ensure freshness.
"With WillYUM Spice, we are giving novice and experienced chefs alike a fresh alternative for all their culinary needs and inspiring them to be creative," Brandalyn said. "The gift of spice is truly the gift that keeps on giving."
In the coming months, the company plans to partner with local restaurants to showcase some of the signature WillYUM Spice recipes. For specific farmers' market dates or to order WillYUM Spices -- or for recipes, in the blog -- check out their website.
