Perwez and more than 100 other Ossining High School students listened to Astorino speak at an assembly for young entrepreneurs Tuesday morning about his triumphs and failures in business. Astorino coordinated the assembly after learning about the high school’s business program, which was recently honored by the New York State Department of Education and the Business Teachers Association as “an outstanding model for other school districts to follow,” according to a news release.
Perwez, who sat in on the assembly, said she was surprised to hear how important Astorino and others found the business program.
“I thought it was really inspiring to hear how he was able to accomplish so much at such a young age,” the 17-year-old senior said. “He was really passionate about business, and it really opened my eyes to see that kind of passion and success.”
Astorino said he found the program to be one of the most important at any school district in Westchester.
“I heard about the creative approach that Ossining High School is taking to prepare its students to manage their personal finances and to open up their eyes to the various opportunities of a career in business, and I wanted to meet the kids,” Astorino said before the assembly, according to a news release.
During the assembly, Astornio offered tips to the students on how to become successful.
“If you look at the most successful people, they took some big risks. It was all in,” Astorino told the students. “Perseverance is important. You’re not going to get a free ride. You’re going to have to really want it, and you’re going to really have to devote your time if you want to be successful.”
Business teacher Debra Jacoby, who coordinated the business program and the assembly, said she was very happy to hear the students and Astorino react to the assembly and the class in such a positive manner.
“I think it’s so important for our kids to know about business before graduating high school and to really know how to handle their money and plan to become successful,” Jacoby said, stressing that the program has become even more important in the struggling economy. “I thought it was really mutually beneficial, because I’m always telling my students about success and teaching them about the importance of publicity. But it was also beneficial for people to see what we’re doing because so many parents aren’t aware that we have this program and how much it will mean to the students in the future.”
