The annual "paint job" at 30 village businesses was taking place in preparation for Nyack's renowned Halloween Parade this Saturday. A total of 120 district students, 24 from middle school, the rest from the high school, were decorating windows using tempura based on drawings they made for a class assignment.
High School students were given the phrase "Across the Universe" to inspire them. They were asked to tie that theme to Halloween.
Claire Coco, an 11th-grade student, drew an alien, but rather than go with a typical green complexion, she lightened up the face. "I liked the idea of having him here on earth," said the artist.
Coco, and fellow artists spent the day painting. The best part about winning this competition, apart from artistic recognition, was a day off from school.
