Freight Train Derailment Shuts Down Highway In Region; 2 Cars Plunge Into River
Cleanup efforts are underway following a freight train derailment that shut down a major highway in the region. The Rensselaer County incident happened just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, near Route 67 in Valley Falls. County officials said a Norfolk Southern train was carrying a total of 94 cars when 10 of them derailed near the Hoosic River. Of the 10 cars that left the tracks, two went into the river. A Northern Westchester mayor who is fed up with the dangerous conditions on major roadways is calling on the state for action. In a letter to state transportation officials, Briarcliff Manor Mayor Steve Vescio once again presses state Department of Transportation officials to address the serious and ongoing safety issues on the heavily trafficked and outmoded Route 9A in as it winds through Briarcliff and Ossining. Daytime Closures Scheduled On Taconic State Parkway In Region
Be ready for possible travel delays on the Taconic State Parkway in the coming days. Road crews in Columbia County will be closing both directions of the parkway between Chatham and Claverack beginning Tuesday, Aug. 16, the NY State Department of Transportation said. Full closures are planned from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. between I-90 and State Route 295 through Thursday, Aug. 18. Transportation officials said the closures will allow road crews to complete needed paving operations. Stretch Of Roadway In Hudson Valley Renamed For Firefighter Who Died Battling Blaze
A section of a busy Hudson Valley roadway has been renamed to honor a fallen area firefighter who was killed in a massive fire trying to save more than 125 residents. Route 45 in Rockland County between New Hempstead Road and East Eckerson Road is now designated as “Firefighter Jared Lloyd Memorial Highway." Roadwork Alert: Single-Lane Closure Scheduled On Route 17
The New York State Department of Transportation announced that there will be single-lane closures for several hours on Route 17 in Orange County. Route 17 will be closed eastbound between exit 126 (Route 94) and exit 129 (Museum Village Road) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29 in the Town of Blooming Grove and Village of Chester.
