Eight New York members of organized crime families, including six from Long Island, are among nine men who have been charged by federal authorities with racketeering and related offenses.
The charging documents were unsealed on Tuesday, Aug. 16 in federal court in Brooklyn, naming the suspects, including a Nassau County police detective, from the Bonanno and Genovese organized crime families, said Breon Peace, US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

Binghamton University Student Dies In Accident Weeks Before Graduation
A Binghamton University student who was a volunteer firefighter on Long Island has died.
Andrew Desiderio, a senior from Mineola in Nassau County, was 21 years old, majoring in mechanical engineering, with a minor in economics, and was due to graduate next month.
Desiderio died Monday, April 12, as the result of a hiking accident, the university said in a statement, adding, "No additional details are available at this time."
Desiderio became a junior lieutenant in the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department in 2016, three years after joining the department.

Hudson Valley Man Indicted For Allegedly Fathering Child Of Girl, 12
A 45-year-old man in Westchester has been indicted for allegedly having sexual intercourse with a minor over the course of two years and impregnating her.
Croton-on-Hudson resident Pablo Dure was indicted on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and arraigned on one count of course of sexual conduct against a child, a violent felony, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. announced.
It is alleged that between Dec. 1, 2017, and Nov. 1, 2019, Dure engaged in sexual intercourse on a regular basis with a girl from the time she was 10 until she was 12.
