According to the state police, troopers were dispatched to investigate a residential burglary in August 2013 that occurred on Old Hopewell Road. The victim reported that more than $8,000 worth of jewelry and foreign currency was stolen from her home.
Smith was identified as a suspect through DNA evidence that was recovered during the course of the investigation. In addition to the Wappinger burglary, the DNA also tied Smith to a burglary in Poughkeepsie, police said.
Smith was charged with felony second-degree burglary and arraigned in Wappinger Town Court. He was returned to the custody of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
State police were assisted by the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office and the Fishkill town Police Department.
