HYDE PARK, N.Y. -- Firefighters from the Roosevelt Fire District in Hyde Park made quick work Sunday night of saving more than 20 Alpacas in a pen located beside a barn that was on fire.
Firefighters were called to the barn fire on Cardinal Road around 9:07 p.m., said Assistant Chief Jeff Scala.
When firefighters arrived they found the Alpacas in the pen right beside the fire, as well as several peacocks nearby, Scala said.
Before being able to douse the flames, firefighters had to quickly moved the animals to another pen, he added.
"Believe it or not this is the second time we have worked a fire where lamas were involved," he said.
The barn, which was fully engulfed in flames, was a total loss, he added.
Officials from the Dutchess County ASPCA were on scene to check out the Alpacas, as well as the peacocks, Scala said.
Roosevelt Fire Department was assisted by Fairview and Hyde Park fire departments.
No animals or firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
