Veteran Brewer Joins The Brewery at Hyde Park's Culinary Insitute

HYDE PARK, N. Y. -- Hutch Kugeman is the new head brewer for The Brewery at the Culinary Insititue of America, a new educational facility at the Hyde Park institute created in partnership with Brooklyn Brewery.

Prior to joining the The Brewery at the institute, Kugeman was founding brewer at Crossroads Brewing Company in Athens, which won the Matthew Vassar Brewers' Cup for Best Craft Beer Brewery in the Hudson Valley and the inaugural John Calen Memorial Award for best Pale Ale in New York State 

"This job brings together two things I'm passionate about: brewing and education," said Kugeman, who was a middle school teacher before becoming a brewer. 

Kugeman's beers have won several awards, including at the Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup, North American Beer Awards, and TAP New York Festival. 

Kugeman was brought on board with the help of James Beard Award-winning Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver. Kugeman will lead the production of four kinds of beer for the public restaurants and student dining facility on the college's New York campus, under the auspices of the hospitality management company Restaurant Associates. 

The Brewery at the insitute is primarily a classroom where bachelor's degree-level students learn about the ingredients, equipment, and techniques required to produce ales and lagers. 

The class, called the art and sciences of brewing, was launched this semester to help future chefs think differently about beer, and elevate its status on a level with wine.
