HYDE PARK, N.Y. -- Nearly 70 horses carrying riders of various experience levels took part recently in the Rombout Foxhounds Spring Hunter Pace.
The equestrian competition drew 29 teams to Dutchess County from New York City, Albany, Chatham, Millbrook, Rhinebeck, Dover Plains and elsewhere, according to a statement from event organizers.
"It was an ideal day for both horses and riders - not too hot, not too much sun to distract horses and riders, good footing for the horses. Everyone had a terrific time," Douglas Nieters, a joint master of the Rombout, said of the May 21 event.
The riders tested their horses on a cross country course with jumps along the way, organizers said. Each team was timed and judged for riding form. Blue ribbon prizes were awarded in three categories, First Flight, Hilltoppers and Juniors.
Nieters said the event was good for the horses and a "wonderful chance for riders to get together with people who share their interest in countryside, exciting riding and jumping and all things horse-related."
