Yes, it's true. Italian ice fans will have to find an alternative and a new way to celebrate spring.

Officials with the company confirmed with the Daily Voice on Thursday that they will be closing their doors for good in the near future.

Rumors have been circulating for about a month since a for sale sign went up outside the local favorite.

Word is a new restaurant will be opening in the spot, but Rita's remained mum on what it might be.

The Italian ice makers announced their closing on Facebook: "Rita's Hyde Park will NOT be opening this spring. We are extremely appreciative for your business and loyalty. Visit us at our Wappingers location on Route 376," they said.

Each year on the first day of spring, Rita’s offers free Italian ice to customers, and reportedly gave away almost a million free cups last year at all their locations.

The following Hudson Valley Rita’s Italian Ice locations will be opening this spring:

  • Middletown – 92 Dolson Road
  • Monticello – 287 East Broadway
  • Peekskill – 1877 East Main St.
  • Poughkeepsie – 8 Taft Ave.
  • Wappingers Falls – Brookmeade Plaza 985 Route 376
