Former HS Principal In Rockland County 'Known For His Unconditional Kindness' Dies
A beloved educator and coach from Northern Westchester known for making a lasting impression on his students has died. Joseph Troy of Somers died on Thursday, Nov. 3 at the age of 83, according to his obituary. Born in 1939 in New York City, Troy graduated from St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Barrytown in 1957 and earned his bachelor's degree in Biology at Catholic University in 1962 as well as his master’s degree in Education and Doctoral Studies from New York University, his obituary said. Some schools in the Hudson Valley have earned top marks in 2021 by being recognized with National Blue Ribbon status. US Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona announced 325 schools across the country were recognized for their overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among students. 31 From Hudson Valley Named Regeneron Science Scholars
A total of 31 of the Hudson Valley's best and brightest high school seniors were among 300 chosen to compete with some of the nation’s top students in the Regeneron Science Talent Search competition. The 300 scholars were chosen out of 1,760 applications that were received from 611 high schools across 49 states. The 300 hail from 193 American and international high schools, Puerto Rico, and two other countries. Of the scholars, 27 came out of Westchester, with three in Putnam, and one in Dutchess. A total of 22 schools in the Hudson Valley, including 17 in Westchester, were among 155 high achieving and high progress schools state-wide identified as Reward Schools by the State Education Department in an announcement made Thursday. There is no shortage of Hudson Valley high schools that are among the best for athletes in New York, according to a new list released by Niche.com. The website analyzes data sets and reviews to produce rankings, report cards and profiles for schools, colleges and places to live.
