The resident received a telephone call from someone claiming to be a member of the Sheriff's Office about a supposed family member who had been arrested and was in need of bail money, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Instead of complying with the request, the would-be victim reported the incident to police.
"Thankfully, the individual identified the call as suspicious and did not make any payment," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "The individual's suspicious was validated when the family member returned home a short time later."
While this type of call is nothing new, more recent attempts have utilized software that makes the incoming call appear as though it is from the authorities, police said.
The Sheriff's Office said that no one from the office will ever request bail money through the telephone and that such payments are only accepted in person at the Sheriff's Office or the Rockland County jail.
Anyone who may receive a similar call is urged to hang up immediately and then try to trace it by using the *57 system. The incident should then be reported to the Sheriff's Office at 845-638-5401.
