Rockland Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. With Series Of Events

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday of January, around the time of the Civil Rights leader's Jan. 15 birthday.

To honor the occasion, many Rockland venues are gearing up to celebrate, offering everything from lectures to worship services and volunteer opportunities. A sampling is listed below. Feel free to add additional events to our events calendar. 

Saturday, Jan. 16

Congers: Painting Pantry Offices with Together Our Unity Can Heal, Inc. (TOUCH) invites those 18 and older to help give this pantry a new coat of paint. Event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Celebrate King: Volunteer New York!

Nyack: You can create and wrap birthday boxes at the Nyack Center from 10 a.m. to noon. This family-friendly event caters to those five and older. Celebrate King: 58 Depew Ave., (845) 358-2600, www.nyackcenter.org/.

Suffern: The First Annual Dare 2 Dream MLK Unity Weekend Award Ceremony and Benefit Show is taking place at Rockland Community College and features a live performance by Reggae Artist Gyptian. Doors open at 5 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go to help support Spring Valley's Martin Luther King Multi Purpose Center. Celebrate King: Go to Eventbrite link HERE for information.

Spring Valley: A commemorative service at First Baptist Church honors Dr. King and begins at 7:30 p.m. Celebrate King: First Baptist Church, 6 Hoyt St., (845) 352-0022, www.firstbaptistchurch-springvalley.org/.

Monday, Jan. l8

Spring Valley: The 6th Annual Martin Luther King Day celebration, sponsored by the The Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center, is at Ramapo High School this year. Doors open at 3 p.m. with a host of sponsors and vendors. The Unity Celebration features drama, dance, poetry, music and a keynote address by Weldon McWilliams IV. Nyack: The Nyack Branch of the NAACP will host an interfaith service at 2 p.m. at Pilgrim Baptist Church. All are welcome. Celebrate King: 80 N Franklin St. , call Dr. Frances E. Pratt at (845) 358-1497 for more information.
