Vic Quirolo Out As Iona Prep Basketball Coach

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Iona Prep has parted ways with longtime varsity boys basketball coach Vic Quirolo.

Quirolo had stepped down as the Gaels' varsity football after the 2015 season following 13 years of coaching both sports. He had been the Gaels' basketball coach for 20 years.

Iona Prep finished 15-13 this spring, losing in the Archdiocesan Tournament quarterfinals.

Neither Iona Prep nor Quirolo has publicly commented on the move.

The coaching move does not affect Quirolo's faculty position at the school. He has been a phys-ed teacher at Iona Prep since 1993,

Quirolo led Iona Prep's varsity hoops squad to its first-ever city title in his first season as head coach in 1998 after leading the JV team  to back-to-back city championships in his final two seasons as its coach.

He led Iona Prep's varsity team to six city titles and six division championships, as well as two Catholic state titles.

Many of Quirolo's former players moved on to the major Division I level, including at such programs as University of Virginia, Villanova, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Providence. Former Gael star Ty Jerome is currently enjoying a standout freshman season as a guard at Virginia.

Under Quirolo, the Gaels were elevated to the CHSAA AA Division in 2013, considered by many to be one the best high school basketball conference in the country. 

In addition to bringing a great deal of team success to the Iona Prep program, many of Coach Quirolo’s former players have progressed to play at some of the finest schools such as 

Quirolo is a graduate of Iona College and earned his master in phys-ed from Adelphi University.
