Ursuline, Horace Greeley Meet For Semi-Final Berth

During the regular season, Horace Greeley’s softball team surprised Ursuline with a 1-0 victory. In their latest game, Greeley pitcher Jamie Weisser scattered four hits and her teammates pushed across a run late against Fordham-bound Taylor Pirone, who finished with a two-hitter.

The two teams will meet again as 12th-seeded Horace Greeley travels to fourth-seeded Ursuline in a Section 1 Class AA quarterfinal-round game. The victor moves on to a semifinal Thursday against the winner of No. 9 Arlington-No. 1 R.C. Ketcham.

Greeley comes in off of a 10-inning, 2-1 upset of fifth-seeded White Plains. The Quakers managed one hit against White Plains’ fire-baller Lauren Sputo, but it was timely as Weisser singled in Meryl Rosenberg with one out in the 10th. Weisser allowed five hits and struck out seven against White Plains. She also extricated herself from a jam in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Tigers had runners on second and third with one out.

“We had our chances, we just didn’t get a timely hit,” Ursuline coach John Pirone said. “We were hitting the ball, but the Horace Greeley girls did a great job of making the plays.”

Pirone said the team had a very good practice on Memorial Day in preparation for Weisser.

“We let her get away with pitches on the outside corner,” John Pirone said. “We respect her because she beat us. We’ve been working on a different approach to counter her pitching approach.”
