The fifth-seeded Huguenots will play fourth-seeded White Plains. The winner advances to a semifinal Thursday against the No. 8 Clarkstown-No.1 Suffern winner. Suffern is the defending state champion.
The teams met once during the regular, Dec. 13, with White Plains and goalie Chris Stangarone posting a 4-0 shutout.
“We knew we would be playing either Mamaroneck or White Plains depending on the seeding,” New Rochelle senior and captain Chris Ramondelli said. “When we played them during the regular season, their goalie is very good and after we couldn't score in the beginning we got frustrated and that was our downfall.”
New Rochelle, 13-6-2 this season, has been scoring goals in bunches, recently. During its current five-game winning streak, the Huguenots have scored 31 goals. New Rochelle began the sectional championships with a 7-1 thumping of Carmel.
“When we score, it’s in bunches,” said Ramondelli, who has a Section 1-leading 39 goals and 30 assists. “ We've been playing very well in the past few games and everything is clicking at the right time.”
The Huguenots first line of Brett Barry (39 points), Mark Umbro (29 points) and Ramondelli have scored 75 goals this season.
White Plains, 14-6-1 this season, is on a three-game winning streak during which goalie Stangarone has allowed one goal. The sophomore netminder has five shutouts this season and sports a 2.13 goals against average.
Senior and captain Kevin McGee fuels the Tigers’ offense with a team-leading 25 goals and 23 assists. Matt Conroy has 19 goals and 40 points and Phil Variano and Mike Carrier have 33 and 17 points, respectively.
