New Rochelle Students Tackle Doyle Center Garden

Hallen School art teacher Lauren Bower got her hands dirty Wednesday working with her assistant and three of her students to replenish the garden behind the Hugh A. Doyle Senior Center.

“We support the program (students working in the garden) by having a gigantic plant sale every year, which we just did, and it was all stuff they grew," Bower said of the students. "They have a good time.”

The Hallen School, a private school in downtown New Rochelle serving special-needs students in grades K-12, began its partnership with the senior center about a year ago after moving its garden from the Wildcliff Greenhouse.

Students from the school visit the Davis Avenue center three afternoons a week on a rotating schedule - giving more students a chance to water and plant seeds when the weather permits

With the help of their teachers, students have learned to build plant carts and raise plants using artificial lights.

“We love to do this,” Bower said about being outside, especially when the weather is beautiful, “and we live to garden!”
