New Rochelle School Officials Outline New Plans For Student Re-Registration

After announcing their intention to re-register all students prior to the 2018-19 academic year, New Rochelle school officials have amended that plan to give themselves “a more realistic timetable to complete the re-registration of all 10,700 students.”

New Rochelle Schools Superintendent Brian Osborne announced on Friday that rather than re-register every New Rochelle student, they would do it in stages, beginning with the re-registration of ninth-grade students on promotion this summer. All other grades will be completed during the next academic year.

Former Port Chester Schools Superintendent Charles Coletti has been tasked with leading the initiative, following a successful re-registration under his watch while he was at the helm in Port Chester.

Osborne noted that this process is an amendment to the district’s original plan, which was to re-register all students this summer.

“Having studied similar initiatives in other districts, we believe that the revised schedule is a more prudent approach that will enable us to meet the initial part of the project before regular classes resume in September,” he said. "It will also give us a realistic timetable to complete the re-registration of all 10,700 students without causing undue inconvenience among families.

“We remain committed to re-checking the eligibility of all students to attend our schools, and we believe that registering all students entering New Rochelle High school as first-year students is the right starting point. As an incentive to ensure that families act in a timely manner, we will make re-registration mandatory for ninth grade students before they receive their class 2018-19 schedules.”

According to Osborne, “telephone calls, emails and follow-up letters will be sent to families who do not respond or lose the designated schedule. The re-registration of all students entering the ninth grade is scheduled to be completed on Aug. 22 in order to provide authorization to the secondary school administration to send the schedules to students who successfully completed the process. Ninth grade students who have not registered again will receive a notice that their schedules will be retained until they complete the re-registration process.”
