On Monday, Rockland County District Attorney Anthony Thomas Zugibe announced that Michael Scoca, 51, has been charged with a felony count of third-degree grand larceny for work he was paid for and failed to perform in Stony Point.
According to Zugibe, Scoca, who operates out of West End Contractors, stole $26,500 from the Stony Point homeowner who enlisted his services for a complete kitchen remodel. Scoca started the work, demolishing the kitchen, installing sheetrock and painting but failed to complete construction.
In all, Scoca allegedly failed to install or provide the majority of building materials, including flooring, cabinets, countertops appliances and plumbing work. He then failed to provide an accounting or return of the victim’s money.
Scoca was arraigned in the Town of Stony Point Justice Court and remanded to the Rockland County Jail because of two previous felony convictions. He is due back in court on Tuesday, Aug. 9. Scoca faces a prison term of up to seven years.
“The victim in this case hired the defendant and paid him substantial amounts of money for materials and home improvement work that was never performed,” Zugibe stated. “To avoid being another victim of a home repair scheme, consumers should request and check a contractor’s references and contact the proper agencies to ensure that he is licensed.”
