Westchester Medical Center issued a statement in which it said it “has now concluded that it has no alternative but to terminate these discussions.”

Sound Shore Medical Center, in New Rochelle, is the parent of Mount Vernon Hospital. It and Westchester Medical Center, in Valhalla, had been in talks to merge all three facilities since late last year. The Wall Street Journal says the merger was seen as a way to financially strengthen all three hospitals.

Although this attempt to merge facilities was unsuccessful, medical leaders have called Westchester’s health-care system unsustainable and believe consolidation will have to happen.

The Westchester County Association recently formed a Healthcare Consortium to address this problem by mapping out a new model for providing healthcare services.
