On Monday night, water service was disrupted by the main break on Cedar Street, which dumped hundreds of gallons of water into the roadway near the Radisson Plaza downtown. Service was restored shortly before 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning, but residents near the break in Pelham and New Rochelle may experience discolored water and decreased pressure until Wednesday.
Suez Water New York, formerly United Water, has suggested that residents that experience discolored water at the tap should run a cold water faucet in the lowest level of the home to clear sediment, and they have recommending against using hot water or running laundry until the line is clear.
While discolored, the water that is coming out of taps is safe to drink, according to officials. If discoloration continues into the week, residents have been advised to call SUEZ directly at 877-266-9101.
According to officials, “discolored water is caused by iron and manganese sediment and has no health impact. Even though water may be discolored, it continues to meet state and federal drinking water standards.”
