Scarsdale Almanac: The Golden Horseshoe

Horses once galloped around a racetrack where the aptly named Golden Horseshoe Shopping Center now sits, straddling the New Rochelle and Scarsdale border on Wilmot Road.

In 1952, Ben Miller purchased the privately owned but shuttered race track, which sits on about eight acres of land. His plan was to turn it into a shopping center. IFour years later a small, four-store, commercial building opened to the public. Since 1956 the center has grown to house 22 businesses ranging from supermarkets, an ice cream scoop shop, restaurants, a wine store to clothing boutiques, a dry-cleaners, a bank, a post office and more.

A 1999 facelift created a tudor-style façade of the commercial center, which blends in with some of the Village of Scarsdale's architecture.

Though never coming to fruition, Miller's original plan was for the shopping center to one day be in the shape of a horseshoe. Nevertheless, it is a popular shopping destination for many.
