Pelham Jewish Center Starts Outreach Program

PELHAM, N.Y. – The Pelham Jewish Center recently teamed with Willow Towers Assisted Living in New Rochelle to start a Jewish study program.

Students in the program meet with senior citizen residents of Willow Towers each month to study and discuss important topics about the Jewish faith.

Rabbi David Schuck of the Pelham Jewish Center said in a press release that the interaction between the young students and senior citizens will lead to genuine connection.

“The time that our kids spend with the residents at Willow Towers is not out of pity,” Schuck said. “Our students are deeply enriched by the encounters and relationships as much as anyone else."

The two generations participated in a game called “Personal Bingo” in one of the first sessions. Teacher Ethan Witkovsky asked players questions including who was an only child, who played a musical instrument and who spoke multiple languages. The participants filled out their bingo squares and discovered some common ground.

Schuck said the Pelham Jewish Center’s partnership with Willow Towers helps the synagogue carry out its mission.

"The Jewish tradition suggests that cultivating a deep respect for our elders and shaping our lives around them, with their needs at the center, is of utmost importance,” Schuck said. “We are trying to live up to this expectation in deed, not just in the abstract.”
