New Rochelle Shooting Victim Remains Critical

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The local resident who was shot by her father near the train station early Wednesday remained in critical condition at Westchester Medical Center Thursday, according to New Rochelle Police Department Commissioner Patrick Carroll.

Several residents of the Avalon on the Sound apartment complex, adjacent to the site of the shooting, expressed concern about what they said was a high incidence of crime in and around their building. At a Wednesday news conference about the shooting, Carroll said that overall, New Rochelle is “very safe,” ranking as one of the safest among cities its size nationwide.

The shooting this week was an act of domestic violence and the investigation is now closed, Carroll said Thursday.

“It’s not a preventable crime,” Carroll said.

Manhattan resident Alfredo Monegro, 61, shot his daughter, New Rochelle resident Miosotis Monegro, 34, in the neck Wednesday morning near the New Rochelle train station and then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life, police said.

Miosotis Monegro was initially taken to Sound Shore Medical Center, and transferred to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla later in the day.
