With winds reaching upwards of 70 mph in the Lower Hudson Valley overnight, a tree measuring more than 15 feet was ripped from its roots, completely blocking the roadway, crushing the hood of one vehicle, striking another and puncturing a windshield of a parked car in a nearby driveway.

Con Edison responded to the scene early on Thursday morning, and remained on scene as they needed to restring multiple power lines that were also affected by the storm. As a result of the accident, police were forced to shut down Fifth Avenue between State Street and Pinebrook Road for most of the day.

On Thursday, neighbors gathered near the scene of the downed tree to observe as crews began cleaning debris.

“I knew it was windy last night, but I didn’t think that something like this could happen,” Sylvan Place resident Caleigh Walsh said while observing the damage. “Ultimately the neighborhood may have been fortunate that no one was outside in that weather and that it didn’t hit anyone’s houses.”
