New Rochelle Improves Electronic Book Selection

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - New Rochelle Public Library patrons’ foray into the Digital Age continues to grow as more and more are taking advantage of the technology that provides downloadable e-books and audiobooks.

“We’re getting more audiobooks,” said New Rochelle Public Library Director Thomas Geoffino about the books available on cassette tape as well as compact discs.

To increase the number of electronic e-books, or books available by e-mail from home and on electronic devices, $130,000 has also been allocated through the Westchester Library System.

“We’re getting existing titles that will be a good source of e-books available through the electronic system,” he said.

There are currently 3,095 unique titles available for audiobook downloads and 4,060 titles for e-books. There will be even more titles available in 2012.

It is from the system’s site that patrons can download the digital books and audiobooks. Users need a valid library card and PIN as well as a device that meets the system requirements for the type of materials they want to download, along with an e-mail address as a place to hold a title.

Supportable devices include PC Windows, Mac, Android, Blackberry, iPhone, iPad and iPad Touch, Sony Reader and Nook. The Amazon Kindle was recently added to the list.

Titles on these devices are available at the library on a subscription basis for one to two weeks. Patrons have the option to obtain another title onto the device, or give another person a chance.

“People are basically getting good use out of it,” said another New Rochelle Public librarian Dave Torres.
