New Rochelle Educational Fund Holds Literary Fest

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – New Rochelle High School junior and Performing and Visual Arts Education Three student Amanda Murphy stepped on the Linda Kelly Threatre stage with other P.A.V.E. students as part of the group’s student performance from New Rochelle High School’s acclaimed theatre group during the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence Rubie Saunders Fall Literary Festival Friday morning.

Although Murphy might have felt nervous prior to the group’s performance, it was also a monumental occasion since it was her first time performing with other fellow theater enthusiasts at the festival throughout her tenure with the group since freshman year.

“I love performing, so it’s all kind of mixed,” said Murphy.

Murphy was honored to perform with P.A.V.E in front of her fellow honors English classmates, students, staff and distinguished guest speakers, including New Rochelle High School 1968 graduate and 19th Century Bookshop Proprietor, Stephan Lowentheil, New Rochelle High School graduate and American Booksellers Association CEO, Oren Teicher, and New Rochelle High School graduate and Penn State DuBois Professor of English, Richard Kopley. The student has performed with the group mumerous times.

“The fact that they get to see me perform is pretty cool,” said Murphy. “They know how I am academically, but they don’t know how I am outside of the classroom.”

Attendees were given an opportunity to meet and greet with the authors prior to their lectures.

“I’m really delighted to be here,” Teicher said as he addressed the crowd following his opportunity to express his knowledge about the book business. “It’s good to be back in New Rochelle High School.”
