New Rochelle Council Candidates Face Off at Forum

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The economy, New Rochelle’s green sustainability plan, and youth programs were the three most discussed items during Monday night’s League of Women Voters of New Rochelle candidate forum in Council Chambers of New Rochelle City Hall.

City Council District 1 incumbent council member Louis Trangucci said he is in favor of the plan to make New Rochelle more environmentally sound, but opposes outside entities controlling what residents do and don’t do environmentally – which he why, he said he voted against the city’s GreeNR sustainably plan.

His District 1 challenger, Roberto Lopez criticized Trangucci as the city council’s only opposing vote on the plan. Lopez said he is supportive of GreeNR and indicated he would have voted in favor of the sustainability plan.

City Council District 3 candidate John Earvin said he would be able to use his experience working with programs such as Job Corp to help the local youths, if elected.

“I can really be somebody who they can look up to,” Earvin said. “I think it’s so important to help the young.”

Earvin’s opponent, incumbent council member, Jared Rice, also indicated that he is qualified in the area of assisting the youth. “I can really be somebody who they can look up to,” he said.

The League of Women Voters of New Rochelle sponsored two candidate forums as part of its nonpartisan mission to promote informed citizen participation in government.
