“The recent storms have stressed our parks system, but with the help of thousands of community-minded county residents, we are pushing back with Pitch In for Parks,” Astorino said. “This is one of several environmental initiatives happening in Westchester in April, and they all reinforce the basic message of Earth Day – that there are many steps that we can take every day to protect the planet. With Pitch In for Parks everyone’s contribution of ‘sweat equity’ – large or small – can add up to make a great, positive impact on the beauty and health of the county parks.”
Volunteers at Glen Island will work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to spruce up the park for spring and summer. They will spread mulch around trees and flower beds, rake gravel to rectify damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, separate sand from the grass area on the beach and plant flats of flowers.
Pitch In for Parks, Westchester’s largest one-day volunteer cleanup of county parks and trailways, is an annual event. This weekend, volunteers will also be working at many other parks, including Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, up and down the Bronx River Reservation from Valhalla to Bronxville and at Muscoot Farm in Somers.
