PELHAM, N.Y. The villages of Pelham and Pelham Manor will not shoot any fireworks or host any parades in honor of the Fourth of July. Depot Market executive chef David Katz decided that he will probably go to New Rochelle for holiday festivities.
"You've got to see the fireworks," Katz said. "The Fourth of July isn't the Fourth of July without fireworks."
Katz, the vice president of Pelham's Chamber of Commerce, said he usually watches fireworks in New Rochelle each year. And while he wishes the celebration could be a bit closer to home, he understands the constraints.
"I would love for Pelham to do something, but it's too small of a town," Katz said.
Ashlin Cooke, owner of the Pelham Pet Shop, is a British woman who grew up in Hong Kong. Despite her diverse background, she understands the Fourth of July fervor.
"It's a great holiday for everyone," Cooke said. "It's a time to be patriotic. We all have license to be patriotic without taking any political side."
Cooke said the space constraints in Pelham do not allow for a fireworks display and as a result, most families will probably travel to find one.
Although Pelham residents must leave town to watch colorful fireworks burst in the sky, Katz said the spirit of the holiday is with loved ones.
"Fourth of July is a day to be spent with the family," Katz said.
