NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Days after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the planned dissolution of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson announced the formation of an Advisory Committee on Immigrant Affairs (ACIA) in the city.

The mayor said the non-partisan committee, comprised of volunteers with different backgrounds will provide him and other leaders in New Rochelle on matters that affect immigrant communities in the city.

“Immigrants have contributed immeasurably to the strength, vitality and character of our city, but have often been under represented in civic decision making,” he said. “Especially at a time of heightened sensitivity to the issues surrounding immigration.”

According to the ACIA mission statement, they hope to “foster a climate of understanding and respect among all diverse constituencies of New Rochelle; recommend actions, practices and policies to address the concerns and needs of the immigrant communities in New Rochelle; and help facilitate two-way communication between immigrant residents and decision makers in local government.”

The ACIA’s first act was to issue communications prepared by the American Immigration’s Lawyer Association regarding the recent suspension of DACA.

Anyone interested in providing feedback to the ACIA or offering suggestions can do so by emailing

“ACIA members are unified in their desire to ensure that New Rochelle is a place where immigrant communities feel safe and can thrive,” ACIA Chair Ariel Alarcon added. “We look forward to working with the Mayor and all local leaders to serve the interests of our beautiful, diverse city.”
