Sadat X, who worked as an elementary school teacher in New Rochelle turns 45 on Sunday.
Sadat X, a rapper, most famed as a member of Alternative hip hop group Brand Nubian, was born Derek Murphy on Dec. 29, 1968, in the Bronx.
Originally known as Derek X, Sadat takes his name from the late Egyptian president Anwar Sadat. In 1996, Sadat X appeared on the Red Hot Organization's compilation CD, "America is Dying Slowly," alongside Biz Markie, Wu-Tang Clan, and Fat Joe, among many other prominent hip hop artists. The CD, meant to raise awareness of the AIDS epidemic among African American men, was heralded as "a masterpiece" by The Source magazine.
Sadat worked as an elementary school teacher in New Rochelle. He also coaches children basketball for the New York City Basketball League. He also played point guard for the Howard University basketball team.
On March 23, 2010, Sadat X released "Wild Cowboys II," the long-awaited sequel to his 1996 solo debut "Wild Cowboys," on Fat Beats Records. On Feb. 23, 2010, he released an EP, containing five songs from the album and their complementary instrumentals.
