This week, organizers with the New Rochelle Council on the Arts, the Fund for Educational Excellence and the New Rochelle Public Library unveiled the Doctorow Legacy Initiative, a multi-faceted proposal to benefit the arts and community in the author’s name.
The Doctorow Legacy Initiative proposes the sponsoring of a public work of art that will include the creation of several educational programs under Doctorow’s name and a new Heritage Award for his former Broadview Avenue home.
According to the Doctorow Committee, the proposed monument “will promote reading and literacy in the community - twin passions for Doctorow - and become a destination for those who admire Doctorow and his work, inspiring civic pride as well as providing an aspiration model for our young people.”
The monument is expected to be installed at Huguenot Park no later than Spring next year. New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson noted that the monument will serve to remind residents of the city’s rich past.
“New Rochelle is enormously proud of our long relationship with E.L. Doctorow,” he said. “Through this community initiative, we will honor a beloved resident, pay tribute to his extraordinary talent and ensure that future generations in our city continue to draw inspiration from E.L. Doctorow’s remarkable life and work.”
