Hydrant Flushing May Lead To Discolored Water, Low Pressure In New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Residents in New Rochelle may begin experiencing discolored water and reduced pressure at the pump as SUEZ begins its annual fire hydrant maintenance and main flushing program.

Next week, beginning on Monday, May 8, SUEZ will begin the program, which is expected to last approximately three weeks. Work is scheduled to take place each day between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

During the work, crews will let water flow free from the hydrants, removing harmless minerals that collect in the mains over time, a spokesman from SUEZ said. During that time, SUEZ customers may experience a temporary lack of water pressure or discolored water.

According to SUEZ, the water is safe, but customers may want to wait until the water runs clear before drinking it, washing clothes or doing dishes. Running cold water through the line for several minutes should result in a clear product.

“The project is part of the company’s routine maintenance program to assure high water quality and reliability,” Roberto Hernandez, manager of SUEZ operations in Westchester said. “It is also necessary to be sure that the hydrants are working properly in the event that they need to be used by firefighters.”
