Flowers (City) Park, which is home to more than 25 organizations and 200 local sports teams, was recognized by the New York State Recreation and Park Society with the inaugural Exceptional Park Design Award.
Beginning in 2008, the 22-acre athletic complex underwent a large-scale, multi-phase re-design, courtesy of a near $10 million Legacy Grant from Westchester County. Improvements included a re-arranged field arrangement to allow for multiple events at any given time and improved parking and traffic patterns.
Both Rosina Stadium and Skidelsky Field saw new synthetic turf surfaces and drainage systems installed and lighting was expanded for daily use. Additionally, a splash pad water playground and basketball areas were erected to “promote free, healthy, recreational play.”
This week, New Rochelle Parks and Recreation Commissioner Bill Zimmerman and City Manager Chuck Strome were presented with a plaque recognizing the city and its park.
“The City of New Rochelle Parks & Recreation Department is honored to receive the inaugural Exceptional Park Design Award from the New York State Recreation and Park Society, recognizing our flagship athletic complex at Flowers (City) Park,” Zimmerman said. “The use of the facility by thousands of athletes throughout the year is a further testament to this accomplishment.”
