Nrpl Big Read And Nraa Exhibit Coming To New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Nine middle and high school students will bring "The Adventures of Tom Sawer" to life in a series of pop-up performances for New Rochelle's 2015 Big Read.

The Banjo Rascals will perform at the BID Farmer's Market on Library Green for a community fence-painting party June 13. The event is part of the NRPL Big Read series.

The first presentation by the Big Read Reader's Theater Troupe will be a site reading at 7:30 p.m. June 2 at Trinity-St. Paul’s Church Cemetery. The troupe will re-enact the scene where the titular character and Huck Finn visit a cemetery in search of a cure for warts. This event is free and participants are asked to bring a folding chair. 

From 9-11:30 a.m. June 6, the troupe will perform a scene at the Department of Parks and Recreation's annual Fishing Derby Classic awards ceremony. The ceremony takes place at the Twin Lakes at Huguenot Park. Special prizes will be awarded to participants dressed as characters from the book. The derby is open to children in grades K-8 and participants are required to bring their own rod, reel and hook. 

The BID Farmer's Market on Library Green will host a community fence-painting party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13. A replica of the fence Tom Saywer had his friends paint will be installed and participants of all ages are invited to grab a paintbrush and participate. After the Banjo Rascals perform live music, the theater troupe will perform scenes from the book.

The Reader's Theater Troupe will give another site reading from -3-4 p.m. June 14 at Sophia Brewster Schoolhouse. The troupe will re-enact the schoolhouse encounter between Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher. The troupe also will lead participants in era-appropriate playground activities and games.

The New Rochelle Public Library will feature the 32nd annual Jules Bauer Award Show from May 31 until June 25 during regular library hours. The show is open to all exhibiting members of the New Rochelle Art Association.
