Fundraising has begun for the annual event, where Polar Plungers will take a quick dive into the Long Island Sound to raise money for thousands of Special Olympians in New York.
Last year, more than 600 participants braved 30 degree temperatures as they raised more than $50,000 that benefited nearly 65,000 athletes that participated in 22 sports at the Olympics.
Any Plunger that raises $150 will receive an official Polar Plunge sweatshirt to warm up when they get out of the water, and there will be awards for the top fundraiser, the top fundraising team and best costume. A post-plunge party at the nearby Dudley's Parkview Restaurant beginning at 12:30 p.m.
"This is the kind of thing that sounds fun when you sign up, then looks increasingly unpleasant as the date approaches, until eventually, you're standing there freezing in your bathing suit and wondering how the heck you got yourself in this crazy mess," he mused. "(But), it's all to benefit a really worthwhile organization, and the whole point is to raise money, so I would be grateful if you'd consider sponsoring me."
Those interested in participating or sponsoring a Plunger can do so here. Registration will be held beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, with the Polar Plunge at noon at Glen Island Park.
