A constant drizzle did not dampened dog lovers’ moods as walkers and their pups took a 1.5-mile stroll along Long Island Sound along the perimeter of Glen Island Park before socializing amongst their peers among dozens of vendors with dog-related merchandise. For the fifth straight year, the event was hosted by New York Pet Rescue and New Rochelle Humane Society.
Proceeds of the event were split between the two organizations, with a portion of the fundraising also going to the Mount Vernon Animal Shelter.
“Every year this is such a great time for everyone,” NY Pet Rescue co-chair Judy Matos said. “It’s an amazing opportunity for dog lovers of lower Westchester rescues to come together for the ultimate purpose of finding dogs good homes.”
New Rochelle Humane Society Co-chair Diane Heim said the weather was not going to stand in the way of a growing tradition.
“The first four years the weather was outstanding – so we were due,” she said. “This is a treat for dog owners to come to an event like this we’re they’re actually allowed to bring their dog. A lot of the dogs here today are adopted, and some even were adopted at Hounds on the Sounds.”
One of those dogs was last year’s Hounds on the Sounds Grand Marshall “Pinky,” who is a female pit bull who was eventually adopted from the New Rochelle Humane Society by Scott and Karen Amrhein. The trio paraded Glen Island Park Sunday – and all of them had smiles.
“We cannot speak highly enough about Pinky and also New Rochlle Humane Society,” Karen said. “This is our second year at Hounds on the Sound and we plan to be here every year going forward.”
