20th Shark Sighting Off Nassau County Beach Leads To Limited Swimming Swimmers at some South Shore beaches on Long Island were forced out of the water after lifeguards spotted a shark looming near the shoreline, officials said. A six-foot-long shark was spotted at approximately 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12 approximately 25 yards off Lido Beach, according to Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin. In response, as a precaution, swimmers were pulled out of the water at Point Lookout, Lido Beach, and Nickerson Beach temporarily. 83 In Voluntary Isolation in Nassau County Due To Coronavirus Concerns Officials have a message for Long Island residents regarding the coronavirus -- don't panic. During a press conference on Wednesday, Feb. 26, health and government officials said there are no confirmed cases of the virus in Nassau County.  However, there are 83 people who are "self-isolating" as requested by the Nassau County Health Department due to visiting mainland China within the past 14 days, said Health Commissioner Dr. Larry Eisenstein.
