These Nassau County Schools Honored For Excellent Athletes, Scholars Just 35 high schools across Long Island were given a special designation for their stellar athletes who double as stellar academics. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, or NYSPHSAA, announced its 2022-2023 “School of Distinction” list on Thursday, July 27. Out of all 84 schools given the award, 35 were from Long Island. In order to qualify, a high school must have 100 percent of its varsity teams qualify for a “Scholar-Athlete team award,” which designates that the team’s average GPA is greater than or equal to a 90. Memorial Services Set For Beloved Massapequa Music Teacher Who Died At Age 83 Funeral arrangements have been announced for a beloved, longtime music teacher on Long Island. Lawrence Holdridge, of Amityville, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the age of 83 following a brief illness, according to his obituary.  Visitations will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., and again from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20 at Powell Funeral Home in Amityville. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale. Lawrence Holdridge, of Amityville, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, at the age of 83, according to a Facebook post by his friend Seth Winner. “It is with a sad heart that I have to announce that one of my closest friends, Larry Holdridge passed away this morning after a short illness,” he said. Former HS Teacher In Nassau Sentenced For Transporting Child Porn A former high school teacher on Long Island will spend time behind bars and register as a sex offender after being sentenced for transporting child porn. Joseph Zanco, 45, who taught at Massapequa High School, was sentenced to five years in prison in Central Islip federal court for transporting child pornography in interstate and foreign commerce.  As part of his sentence, Zanco will also serve seven years of supervised release following his prison stint, at which point he will have to register as a sex offender.
