Improved Public Access Announced For Hempstead State Park Some improvements have been completed at one of Long Island’s most popular parks. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the completion of a near $4 million improvement project at the Hempstead Lake State Park to enhance public access to the park and lake, which represents the largest body of freshwater in Nassau County. The project includes the creation of nearly five miles of trails that can be used for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as improved connections to the lake and ponds with a new kayak launch and fishing pier. Stolen Car Found In Pond Off Southern State Parkway, Police Say A car found in North Pond at Hempstead Lake State Park was stolen in Queens, state park police said. The 2019 Chevrolet Suburban was reported submerged in the pond around 5:41 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 13 by the Nassau County 911 Center, said the New York State Park Police. State Park Police Units along with Nassau County Police Emergency Service Unit responded and found the vehicle submerged in the pond.  Officers immediately entered the water and conducted a thorough search of the vehicle which resulted in no persons being found, state park police said.  An investigation found that …
