The driver, Tommie Hooks, of North Carolina, was arrested for driving while intoxicated-Leandra's law on Saturday, June 23 at 2:20 a.m. in Westbury, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

An officer while on routine patrol reportedly observed Hooks driving a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox exiting a parking lot at 1504 Old Country Road, said police.

The driver allegedly drove directly through a red light while turning westbound onto Old Country Road, according to police.

The officer turned on emergency lights and initiated a car stop, police said.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the driver allegedly emitted the odor of alcohol on his breath, and had slurred speech, and glassy eyes, according to the police report.

Hooks was placed under arrest without incident, said police.

Hooks' 15-year-old and 10-year-old sons were reportedly passengers in the vehicle as well as an 11-year-old nice, seven-year-old nephew, and 38-year-old male cousin, according to police.

All four children were released to a family member at the scene, said police.

The passengers were not injured, according to the report.

Hooks was charged with four counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated (child under 16- Leandra’s Law), four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, two (2) counts of driving while intoxicated, and numerous vehicle traffic law infractions said Nassau County Police.
