IDs Released For Person Of Interest, Victim Of Fatal Shinnecock Reservation Shooting

The identities of both a person of interest and the victim in a fatal shooting on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation have been released.

State Police received a report of the shooting on the reservation for members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation in Southampton just after 5:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16.

The victim, now ID'd as Mtundo Vanterpool, 43, was pronounced dead, with an apparent gunshot wound, according to police.

Vanterpool was a resident of the reservation, but not a member, police said.

State Police are asking for information regarding the location of Michael Gaines, 42, pictured above, who also resided on the reservation, but was not a member. It is believed he has information regarding this investigation, police said.

The New York State Police is requesting that anyone who may have witnessed the incident contact State Police Farmingdale at (631) 756-3300. All calls will remain confidential.

Further details will be released as they become available, state police said.
