The two were among three boys riding bicycles on the shoulder of Express Drive North in Ronkonkoma, near the intersection of Old Nichols Road, when they were struck by the driver of a Ford Explorer at approximately 7:35 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3.
According to Suffolk County Police investigators, the driver - later identified as Hauppauge resident Shannon Palmer - then proceeded to speed away without stopping or checking on the children.
Troy Russell, 9, of North Amityville, was airlifted by a Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition.
Toriano Jamison, 12, of Ronkonkoma, was transported by an ambulance to the same hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The third bicyclist, Maximus Copeland, 6, of Ronkonkoma, was not injured.
The investigation into the hit-and-run led to Palmer’s arrest outside her Roosevelt Boulevard home at 5:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4, where she was charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an incident with serious physical injury.
Palmer is being held at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday afternoon.
